How was your year in travel?

Questo era l'oggetto di una mail che ho ricevuto da Lonely Planet, che mi invitava a fare un bilancio "giramondo" di quest'anno.
Com'è stato? Beh, diciamo che non mi sono tirata indietro, anche se ho optato, vista la situazione lavorativa, su mete più vicine (e più economiche!).
Ripercorrerò questo strano 2012 (sarà un lungo post, spero di non annoiarvi!!).

This was the object of an e-mail I received some days ago from Lonely Planet, which invited me to recall and reflect on the journeys I have made this year.
How has it been? Well, let's say I did not restrain... although I have chosen closer (and less expensive) destinations.
Let's travel back in my memory to remember this strange 2012...(it's gonna be a long post, I hope not to bore you...)


In febbraio, per un colpo di testa, ho fatto un paio di giorni a Bruxelles. Città incantevole, che merita sicuramente un paio di giorni in più, almeno per visitare il Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts e per fare quattro passi tra le vie e i palazzi Art Nouveau.

 E' stata una delle settimane più fredde dell'anno e in effetti le fontane nei parchi erano ghiacciate, ma non hanno tolto nulla all'eleganza di questa città.

In February I suddenly decided I had to go a couple of days in Bruxelles. Lovely city, which deserves a couple days more (at least to see the Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts and to wander in the Art Nouveau district). It has been one of the coldest weeks in the year and the fountains in the parks were frozen but it could only add glamour to this city.

La Grand Place è bellissima e ho avuto la fortuna di trovare un hotel proprio nella piazza, come dire, in piazza San Marco a Venezia. Mi sono concassa questo lusso, insieme alle gaufres calde e coperte di cioccolato fuso, alle favolose moules frites e al museo di Magritte.
Spero di tornare presto, abbinando anche un giro ad Anversa e Bruges e alle famose birrerie trappiste, per far contenti i miei amici. Il Belgio mi ha davvero sorpreso, non ne sapevo quasi nulla e mi incuriosisce....

The Grand Place is fabulous and I've been lucky enough to find a hotel in the heart of this square,

as it was, let's say in San Marco Square in Venice. I have treated myself with this small luxury, as well as hot gaufres covered with melted chocolate, wonderful moules frites and the Magritte Museum.
I hope to come back soon, spending some days also in Antwerp and Bruges and in the famous trappist breweries, to make my friends happy.
Belgium really surprided me: I did not know almost anything before and it makes me very curious

Un paio di mesi dopo, a fine aprile, MR mi convince a visitare la sua Germania, Paese in cui non ero mai stata. Ma invece della classica Berlino o della Baviera cosa mi propone?? Le città della Lega Anseatica, sul Mar Baltico, nel Nord più Nord. Per me un posto vale l'altro, visto che non conosco nulla della Germania e in più stavo leggendo I Buddenbrooks... via con un giro ad Amburgo, Lubecca e Brema. Abbiamo anche aggiunto una mezza giornata a Travemunde, per lasciar vagare lo sguardo sul mar Baltico (chiaramente pioveva....)

A couple of months later MR convinces me to go and visit her Germany, Country in which I have never been.

But instead of the classic Berlin or Bavaria, what does she suggest? The cities of the Anseatic League, on the Baltic Sea, up in the North. I have no objections, as I don't know anything of Germany, and I was most appropriately reading the Buddenbrooks... so we travelled between Hamburg, Bremen and Lubeck. We also added half a day in Travemunde, to let our sight wander on the cold Baltic Sea (obviously it rained...)

medioevale con la statua di Rolando risalti nella sua imponenza. Amburgo, non saprei, tra le tre mi ha colpito sicuramente meno, anche se mi ha portato molto a riflettere sulla insensatezza delle guerre (la città è stata completamente bombardata durante la WWII).
 
It has surely been very interesting: Lubeck is a small jewel, very calm and elegant, with its hidden gardens and rich merchants' palaces, while Bremen must be seen without rain, to fully admire the medieval square with the statue of Roland.
I still have not understood well Hamburg, it has struck me less than the others, though it made me think of the complete nonsense of war (it has been heavily bombed during WWII).

Arrivano le vacanze e non ci siamo ancora accordati per una meta comune (anzi ci siamo detti ognuno per sè). Così approfitto e prenoto un tour in Turchia, che da tempo voglio visitare ma che per la sua vicinanza passava sempre in secondo piano. Sono partita col mio mini trolley alla scoperta dell'affascinante Istanbul, crocevia medioevale delle grandi religioni, dei siti archeologici disseminati sulla costa del Mare Egeo (tra cui gli eccezionali Troia ed Efeso) e della regione più interna e naturalisticamente parlando spettacolare, la Cappadocia.

June has come and we have not found a common destination. So I think about it for a while and I book a tour in Turkey, a place I've been wanting to visit sice a long time but which,

as it's so close, was always postponed. I left with my mini trolley to discover the wonderful Istanbul, medieval cross-road for the great religions, the greek and roman archeological sites (including the exceptional Troy and Ephesus) and the inner and spectacular Cappadocia.

Qui ho vinto la paura e ho fatto un giro in mongolfiera, per godere un panorama mozzafiato sulle stranissime formazioni rocciose che prendono il nome di "camini delle fate".

Un Paese incredibile, vario, ospitale, che conserva siti archeologici di altissima importanza (e voi lo sapete quanto mi piace scarpinare tra le rovine...)
Ma Istanbul mi rimane davvero nel cuore, con la sua vivacità, il gran Bazaar, i colori, i profumi delle spezie, la commovente grandiosità di Santa Sofia...
E anche Goreme, con i camini delle fate che iniziano a prendere forma nel cielo lilla dell'alba....

Here I put away my fear and I made a tour in a baloon, to admire the breathtaking landscape, full of the strangest rocky formations which are named "fairy chimneys".

An incredible Country, very varying, hospitable, which preserves highly important archeological sites (and you know how much I love to walk through ancient ruins....) 

But Istanbul has found a very special place in my heart, with its vivacity, the grand Bazaar, the colours, the perfumes of the spices, the moving grandiosity of Hagia Sofia...
And Goreme too, with the fairy chimneys that take shape in the dawn-lilac sky...



Passano ancora i mesi ed è ora di pensare al classico giretto in Inghilterra, che non può mancare.... soprattutto prima di Natale. Così quest'anno opto per Liverpool, patria dei Beatles e sede di un porto mercantile che ha reso grande l'Inghilterra nel mondo.

Time passes and it's time to think of the classic peek in England which I cannot miss... especially before Christmas. This year I choose Liverpool, hometown of the Beatles and provided with a big harbour which made this city great.

 Purtroppo piove molto e non riesco a godermi appieno la bellezza elegante e discreta della città, ma approfitto e visito alcuni musei veramente interessanti e bel costruiti. E non mi faccio mancare nemmeno una scappata a Chester, per respirare un'aria un po' più retrò...

Unfortunately it rains very much and I cannot feel the elegant and discrete beauty of the city as it deserves. Anyway, I have time to visit some great museums, interesting and well organized. To breath a more "old-fashioned" air I also spend one day in Chester, which I loved last year and decided to visit again.

Io ovviamente sto già tirando a sorte la meta per il 2013....

Uno si aspetterebbe un po' di collaborazione in questo periodo dell'anno, no?
Soprattutto quando la tua casetta deve ospitare la famiglia al completo! E così, mentre uno lava i pavimenti, spolvera, pulisce i lampadari e i quadri, lava le tende, passa la cera sulle porte, stira, cerca di mettere un po' di ordine nella montagna infinita di crafting materials (leggi stoffe, carte, filati, bottoni, adesivi, nastrini ecc...) e butta in forno un apfelstrudel, l'altro cosa fa?
Ecco cosa fa!

One woul expect a little bit of collaboration in this period of the year, wouldn't he?
Especially if your little home has to welcome the entire family! So while one washes the floors, dusts all the furniture, cleans the chandeliers and the pictures, washes the curtains, splashes some wax on the  doors, irons, tries to put some order in the infinite amount of crafting materials and throws in the oven an apfelstruder, what does the other one do???

In ogni caso, tanti auguri da Gatto Arancione (e dalla Strega): temo che nei prossimi giorni il blog sarà l'ultimo pensiero.

Muffins in disguise

Un post velocissimo che oggi ho poco tempo: un esperimento culinario. Beh, più che culinario, "decorativo": la ricetta infatti non mi ha soddisfatto un granchè.
Ma è la prima volta che sperimento la pasta di zucchero colorata, così vi faccio vedere cosa sono riuscita a combinare ieri mattina. Volevo ricreare l'effetto del traditional pudding, così ho preparato un'infornata di semplicissimi muffin al cioccolato fondente che poi ho decorato ricoprendoli con la glassa e un rametto di agrifoglio, tutto modellato con la pasta di zucchero.
Insomma, devo ancora fare parecchia pratica! Ma dopo Natale approfitterò di un buono che avevo acquistato tempo fa per delle lezioni di cake design, così spero di affinare un po' le tecniche.
Dai, come inizio non è così terribile, no???

Pudding - muffins

A very quick post, as I got no time today: a culinary experimentation. Well, decorative, more than culinary, to be honest: the recipe wan not that much.
But it's the first time I use the coloured sugar paste and I want to show you what I did yesterday morning. I wanted to recreate the effect of the traditional pudding, so I prepared some dark chocolate muffins which I decorated covering them with  icing and a branch of holly, all made with sugar paste.
I know I still have to practice a lot... but right after Christmas I'm going to use a coupon for some lessons of cake design, so I hope to get better and better!
It's not that terrible, anyway, as a beginning... is it??

Eccoci al terzo appuntamento con i lavoretti del Gatto Arancione: oggi vi mostro angeli di dimensione "standard", non i piccolini che ho finora pubblicato.
Ho preparato un paio di angeli un po' shabby, con vestiti natalizi ma non troppo appariscenti, entrambi abbelliti da nastrini dorati per ricordare la magia del Natale.
La stoffa verde della gonna di uno dei due è deliziosa!!!
Visto che fa freddo entrambi indossano una sciarpina lavorata ai ferri in morbida lana un po' pelosina bianca e dorata.
Tra le mani hanno una delle classiche coroncine in vimini dal sapore nordico, con un bel nastrino marrone, che richiama il vestito.

Here we are with some other crafts by the Orange Cat. Today I show you some "standard" angels, not the small ones I already posted. 
I prepared a couple of shabby angels, with christmassy dresses but not very eye-catching, both decorated with golden ribbons to recall the magic of Christmas.
The green fabric of one of the two skirts is adorable!!
Considering the very low temperature they also wear scarves, knitted with a fluffy white yarn and a golden one.
They both carry a little wreath (nordic mood) decorated with a ribbon , brown like the dress.

Ho preparato anche tre angeli custodi, con vestiti dai colori neutri e chiari (in modo che possano andare bene sia per un bimbo che per una bimba), con una coroncina di rametti a forma di cuore tra le mani.
 
I also made three guardian angels, in neutral pale colours (so they can protect either a boy or a girl) with a wooden little heart in their hands, to offer their love.

Infine, l'ultimo tipo di bambola "alta" che ho creato quest'anno è il folletto di Natale, con vestitino di morbido pile rosso e un grembiule bianco e rosso. Indossa un cappellino a punta da cui spuntano trecce bionde e una coroncina di vischio fra le mani. Ne ho cuciti un paio identici.

In genere preferisco creare angeli (anche per il loro significato) ma quest'anno ho deciso che ci volevano anche alcuni folletti. Che ne pensate??

The last "tall" dolls I made this year is a Christmas pixie, in a red warm pile dress and a white and red apron, with a lovely pointed hat, blonde braids and a mistletoe wreath in her hands. I made a couple of them. I generally prefer to create angels (also for their meaning), but this year I wanted some pixies too. What do you think???

Eccoci con la seconda parte delle mie piccole creazioni natalizie per quest'anno: i folletti grassi.
E' una variazione dell'angioletto ciccione, ma non ha chiaramente le ali.
Il suo vestitino è fatto di caldissimo pile bianco, decorato con un nastro-volant a quadrettini bianchi e rossi o bianchi e verdi e un mega bottone proprio sul pancino a carattere natalizio.
Inoltre indossa un cappello a punta in feltro rosso o verde.


Here we are with the second part of my Christmas crafts presentation: the fat pixies.
It is a variation of the fat angel, but obviously they have no wings.
Their dress is made of the warmest white pile, decorated by a ruffled ribbon in red or green gingham and a big button, right over the belly with Christmas motifs.
They also wear a red or green felt pointed hat.

 A differenza degli angeli e delle bambole che faccio, che hanno tutte (o quasi) i capelli corti, castani e un po' spettinati, i folletti hanno lunghe trecce bionde, che ricordano la loro origine nordica.

Differently from the angels and from the dolls I make, which have all (almost all) short and a bit untidy brown hair, the pixies have long blonde braids which recall their nordic origin.

I love Milano - S. Ambrogio

Oggi è S. Ambrogio, patrono della mia bella città. Quindi, come da tradizione, visita alla Fiera dell'Artigianato, tra acquisti e assaggi.
E all'uscita... la neve!

Ma vista la ricorrenza di oggi, mettete un bel paio di stivali che vi porto a visitare la Basilica di S.Ambrogio, una delle più belle chiese romaniche d'Italia!
Si trova in piazza S.Ambrogio (!) raggiungibile con la metropolitana e l'ho visitata un pomeriggio di questa torrida estate: faceva così caldo che i turisti erano veramente pochi e ho trovato refrigerio nel silenzio e nell'ombra della chiesa.

Today we celebrate the patron Saint of my beautiful city: S. Ambrogio. So it is tradition that I go and see a World Craft Market, held every year at the beginning of December, spending my time between purchases and food tastes.
And at the exit... we found the snow!

But considering the today celebration, let's wear a pair of warm boots that I take you with me to visit the Basilica of S.Ambrogio, one of the most beautiful romanic churches af all Italy!
It is in S. Ambrogio square (!), where you can go by underground and I visited it one afternoon of the last hot summer: it was so terribly hot that only a few tourists were hanging around and I found some relax in the silence and shadow of the church.

E' stata edificata alla fine del 300 per volere di S. Ambrogio e presenta una struttura tipica delle basiliche del nord Italia: una ampia facciata con tetto "a capanna" preceduta da un portico. Il materiale di costruzione è il mattone rosso, tipico dell'area lombarda.
La facciata sembra ricamata da una serie di piccoli archetti bianchi che si ritrovano anche lungo il portico che crea una via di fuga verso la facciata stessa: lo sguardo è inevitabilmente portato verso l'ingresso. La facciata non è piena come altre chiese decorate solo da un rosone, ma occupata da due serie sovrapposte di logge.
Le colonne del portico, come anche quelle all'interno della basilica sono decorate da capitelli che riprendono i motivi dell'arte romanica (un bellissimo esempio è S. Michele a Pavia) come intrecci di rami, animali fantastici o meno. Anche il portale centrale è circondato da ricami di pietra.
Sono inoltre presenti due diversi campanili, ai due lati della facciata.

It has been built at the end of the fourth century a.C. by will of S. Ambrogio and it presents the typical structure of the basilicas in Northern Italy: an ample hut façade preceeded by a portico. The building material is the red brick, typical of the romanic in Lombardy.
The façade seems to be embroidered by small white arches that continue also along the portico which creates a perspective: the eye of the viewer is inevitably conducted to the main entrance. The façade is not "solid" and decorated only by a rose window, but it is occupied by two floors of loggias.
The colums in the portico, as well as those in the interior are decorated by capitals which present all the typical themes of the romanic art (one beautiful example is  S. Michele in Pavia): branches, vegetation, immaginary beasts and real animals. The main entrance is surrounded by stone embroidery too.
There are also two different bell towers, at the two sides of the façade.

L'interno è molto semplice e arioso e nasconde tre tesori: un'arca in pietra completamente scolpita, costruita su un sarcofago paleocristiano; una struttura che racchiude l'altare, in oro, capolavoro di oreficeria del periodo carolingio e una piccola cappella laterale, il Sacello di San Vittore in Ciel d'Oro, completamente coperta da mosaici di stampo bizantino, tra cui la cupola in oro simili a quelli delle basiliche di Ravenna.

The interior is very simple and airy and it hides three treasures: the first one is a completely sculpted stone arc, built on a paleochristian sarcofagus; the second one is a golden structure that surronunds the altar, which is a materpiece of the Carolingian goldsmith's art. The third one is a small lateral chapel, called Sacello di San Vittore in Ciel d'Oro, which is completely covered by byzantine mosaics, like the ones you can find in Ravenna, of which the dome is all gold!

E' una basilica bellissima, a mio parere (io amo l'arte medioevale) che racconta anche tre leggende. La prima riguarda il serpente di bronzo presente all'interno della chiesa: sembra che il giorno in cui ci sarà la fine del mondo prenderà vita e scenderà dalla sua colonna. La seconda è un mistero: sia all'interno che sulla facciata sono presenti strane scacchiere formate da tesserine colorate. Nessuno sa cosa significhino.
L'ultima invece riguarda un'altra colonna, ma all'esterno della basilica: una colonna bianca nella quale ci sono due buchi piuttosto in basso: si dice che siano stati fatti dalle corna del diavolo stesso, irritato con S. Ambrogio!

It is a wonderful basilica, in my opinion (I love the medieval art and architecture)  which also tells three legends. The first one is related to the bronze snake inside the church: they say that on the very last day it will take life and get down from its column. The second one is still a mystery: both in the inside and on the façade there are some chessboards, made of small red and white teals. No one knows their meaning...
The last one is about another column, this time outside the church: a white column with two holes at the bottom: they say it was the devil himself, with his horns who made them, angry with S. Ambrogio!
