Corkboard tutorial

Come vi anticipavo, vorrei approfittare di questa lunga estate per sistemare tante piccole cose che sono in lista da un po', oltre a far partire nuovi progetti per non trovarmi sempre di corsa in autunno e inverno.
Come al solito  l'estate per me significa guardarmi intorno e trovare un sacco di cose che in casa vorrei modificare o rendere più funzionali.
Una di queste, che mi ha assillato da un bel po', era la realizzazione di una bella bacheca in sughero nella mia craft room, sulla quale appendere sia l'elenco delle cose da fare e delle ordinazioni, sia qualche immagine che mi è di ispirazione o di interesse.
Solo che nella mia craft room le pareti sono già tutte piene (librerie o finestra). Che fare?
Ho pensato di sfruttare uno spazio normalmente inutilizzato ma che si è rivelato utilissimo.
E' stato così semplice, veloce ed economico che voglio condividere con voi l'idea.

As I already anticipated a few days ago, I would try to the make the best out of this long summer to fix some little things in my bucket list, other than start some new projects (so I'm not in a hurry as usual in autumn and winter).
As usual summer to me is looking aroung and finding so many things I'd like to renovate, modify or simply make more functional.
One of these, which has been runnin' in my mind for a long time, is a nice corkboard for my craft room, on which hang both the list of the things I need to do and some inspirational images or phrases.
Only... in my craft room the walls are already full (bookshelves or window)! What to do?
I thought of using a normally unused space, which at the end has been genius!
It's been so simple, fast and cheap that I want to share it with you.


Lo spazio è quello sul fianco di una libreria Billy di Ikea, nella quale ho raccolto molto del mio materiale craft. Ma è anche abbastanza stretto, 28 cm.
Le normali bacheche sono più larghe e anche abbastanza piccole.

The space is the side of a Ikea Billy bookshelf, in which I keep much of my craft material. But this is a little narrow, only 11''. Normal size corkboards are too big for that.

Così ho acquistato le tovagliette Avskild (sempre Ikea, 4,99 € 4 pezzi) in sughero e le ho tagliate della misura giusta: sono 42 x 32 cm, è bastato accorciarle fino ad avere dei pannelli di 42 x 28 cm.
Con un pezzettino di nastro biadesivo le ho attaccate al fianco della libreria, tutte in fila, fino ad avere una bella striscia.

So I bought a pack of  Avskild cork place mats (Ikea, 3,99 $ a pack of 4) and I cut them to the exact size I needed: they're 16,5 '' x 12,5'', I just made them 16,5 '' x 11''.
Then with a strap of biadhesive tape I placed them on the Billy side in order to have a long strip.

E poi... via con le decorazioni! Al posto di appendere con delle puntine tutti i messaggi ho attaccato dei nastri a serpentina sui quali appendere con delle mollettine quello che mi serve.
Easy, no?
Costo: meno di 10 €
Tempo di realizzazione: circa 10 minuti.

And then, I decorated them. Instead of hanging everything with pushpins I glued a piece of rick-rack ribbon on which I will hang what I need with mini cothespins.
Easy, uh?
Price: less than 7 $
Time needed: about 10 minutes.

ps: le tovagliette non sono molto spesse. Chi volesse uno strato più spesso può metterne due sovrapposte, sempre fissate una all'altra con nastro biadesivo, le puntine sicuramente entrano meglio!
E attenzione anche a far combaciare bene i pannelli: io non sono stata precisa e il biadesivo è molto forte, non sono ammessi errori!

ps: the place mats are not that thick: if you want a thicker board you can glue two place mats together, always using biadeshive tape. It works better!
And be very careful and precise: the biadhesive tape is really strong, no mistakes allowed!

Non sono molto sportiva, chi mi conosce lo sa bene...
Ma mi piace guardare le partite dei tornei come i Mondiali o gli Europei. Mi piace molto. Direi che quest'anno me ne sono persa forse un paio, viste o ascoltate alla radio.
E questa sera, la sera della finale, è un'occasione troppo ghiotta per non provare a giocare con la pasta di zucchero.
Ecco il risultato!
Visto che le mie squadre del cuore sono state eliminate tutte.... che vinca il migliore!!

I'm not that sporty, you know....
But I like looking at the World Cup matches (and at the European ones too). I really like it. I would say that this year I have missed just a couple of them, both seen on TV and listened to at the radio.
And tonight, the night of the final match is too an exciting occasion not to try to have fun with sugarpaste.

Dolls of the world - Scotland

Ecco un altro rimaneggiamento di una Tilda già realizzata tempo fa.
Il viaggio in Scozia è stato il mio regalo di laurea e ha un posto speciale speciale nel mio cuore. E' anche stato il mio primo viaggio "itinerante": partenza da Edimburgo e via, dapprima lungo la costa occidentale, verso Fort William. Tappa ovviamente allo spettacolare Eilean Donan Castle dopo aver visitato l'Isola di Skye, con la pittoresca Portree e il castello di Dunvegan. Dopo abbiamo puntato verso Nord, attraverso le Highlands fino ad arrivare alle isole Orcadi. Qui abbiamo visitato siti antichissimi: il neolitico Skara Brae, il cerchio di pietre Ring of Brodgar e la vichinga Kirkwall.
Da qui, dopo aver raggunto di nuovo la Mainland abbiamo percorso la costa occidentale, dopo una tappa ad Inverness (niente Nessie, però) e in alcuni bellissimi paesini di pescatori. Soste ad Aberdeen e a Dundee prima di rientrare ad Edimburgo.

My best memories from Scotland

Here another update of a Tilda I had realized time ago. 
The journey to Scotland was my degree present and has a very special place in my heart. It has also been my first "wandering" journey: we started in Edinburgh and we headed firrst toward the west coast, to Fort William. We obviously stopped to visit the spectacular Eilean Donan Castle after a short stay on the Isle of Skye, with Portree and Dunvegan Castle. Then we headed north, through the Highlands till we reached the Orkney Islands. Here we visited some very ancient sites: the neolythic Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar and lovely Kirkwall.
From here we got back on Mainland and we rode along the east coast, stopping in Inverness (no Nessie, though..) and in some cosy little fishmongers villages. Stops also in Aberdeen and Dundee before reaching Edinburgh again.

E' stato un viaggio bellissimo, tra paesaggi incantevoli, tanto vento, tante pecore, tanti castelli, tanto pesce. Piccole spiaggette di sabbia bianchissima. Erba pettinata dal vento. Scogliere spettacolari e formazioni geologiche incredibili. Il Royal Mile di Edimburgo con i suoi pub. I tartan colorati appesi alle pareti di pietra dei castelli. E un accento che adoro.

It has been a very beautiful journey, among lovely landscapes, much wind, many sheeps, many castles and much much fish. Small beaches of white sand. Wind-combed grass. Spectacular cliffs and incredible geological formations. The Royal Mile in Edinburgh with its pubs. Colorful tartans hung on the stone walls of the castles. And an accent I adore.

Mi piacerebbe tornarci, la parte centrale della Scozia non l'ho vista, con i suoi mille castelli. E mi piacerebbe molto anche vedere le Isole Ebridi, selvatiche e solitarie. Mi piacciono i posti selvatici e solitari. Ma la lista dei posti che vorrei vedere è molto lunga e penso che prima di tornare in Scozia ci siano altri luoghi in cui non ho proprio messo piede. Ma poi, chi lo sa: la vita fa un po' quello che vuole, si pianifica ma alla fine non si sa mai come la realtà si intrometterà nei sogni.

I'd like do go back: I have missed the central part of Scotland, with its many castles. And I'd also like to see the Hebrides, wild and lonely. I like wild and lonely places. But the list of the places I'd like to see is very long and I don't think to go back to Scotland before seeing some of the others in which I've never been. But then, who knows: life does what it wants to do, you can schedule but in the end you never know how reality will insert in your dreams.

Ecco la piccola Tilda. Indossa una blusa in organza bianca con maniche lunghe (fa freddino lassù!) e con un colletto di pizzo arricciato. Sopra alla blusa porta un corsetto in alcantara nera, chiuso da lacci in sottile filo argentato.

Ha una gonna doppia: sopra una in tartan nei toni del verde, arancio e giallo, rifinita da una bordura in pizzo arricchito con paillette nere e perline trasparenti. Al di sotto una sottogonna bianca con un solo strato arricciato, che permette di mantenere in forma il tutto.

Porta i lunghi capelli rossi raccolti da un lato e indossa un cappellino nero, con bordo in pizzo e con una perla-gioiello rossa in cima, al posto del pom pom. I gioielli sono semplici: orecchini argentati a forma di nodo celtico (questo era un piccolo -troppo piccolo- pendente che avevo preso là per me e ora è stato riciclato).

Here is my little Tilda. She has a white organza blouse with long sleeves (it's cold up there!) and with a ruffled lace collar. Over the shirt she wears a black alcantara corset, laced up with thin silver ribbon.

She wears a double layered skirt: a silk tartan one in the tones of green orange and yellow, finished with lace all along its edge which has been enriched with black sequins and transparent seed beads.

 Underneath it she wears a peasant white petticoat with one simple tier which helps to mantain the shape of the sirt.
She keeps her long dark red hair straight and all gathered on one side and wears a small black tan which has been finished with a lace border and a jewel red pearl on top.
Her jewellery is really simple: silver celtic knot earrings (a pendant I bought there and which is really too small for me).

Travel Craft

Non sono scomparsa del tutto.
Ora è finita la scuola, sono terminate un po' delle attività ad essa legate, ho concluso (molto positivamente) il mercatino e ho anche chiuso il catalogo con le collezioni estive.
Finalmente posso fermarmi e riposare un momento.... sono rimaste troppe cose in sospeso, tra cui il mio blog. Ho un po' di idee, una serie di post da pubblicare, ma serve tempo anche per scriverli, per fare le fotografie...Voglio condividere un po' di idee su come organizzare la nostra casa, suggerimenti per sfruttare i piccoli spazi. Voglio parlarvi del mio viaggio in Uzbekistan (fatto a Pasqua e ho terminato l'altra sera di scaricare e foto, vi rendete conto???). Voglio mostrarvi le mie Tilde giramondo con i vestiti di altri bellissimi Paesi che ho visitato. Voglio suggerirvi angolini di Milano e dintorni da visitare (per chi, come me, passera l'Agosto a Milano o per chi prima o poi visiterà questa città e vorrà apprezzare la sua bellezza troppo spesso dimenticata) e dedicarmi a scovarne altri, come anche a visitare una serie di luoghi che ho evidenziato nella mia guida turistica e continuo a rimandare.
Ma una cosa per volta.

I have not disappeared completely.
Now the school has finished, some of the school-related activities have ended, I have concluded (positively in deed) my little market and also the catalogue with the last collection has been finished.
I can finally stop and rest a while... too many things are still on-hold, among which my poor blog. I have a lot of ideas, of posts I want to publish but I need time to write (and translate) them, to make and select pics.... I want to share with you some home-organizating ideas, some tips on how to use also little spaces. I want to talk about my journey to Uzbekistan (I went there during the Easter vacation and I have finished last night to download all the pictures from my camera.. can you believe it???). I want to show you my wandering Tildas, dressed with all the costumes of the beautiful places I have seen. I want to sugest you some secret places in Milan (and around) worth a visit (for who, like me, will spend August here in Milan, or for who intends to visit this city and appreciate its hidden and too often forgotten beauty) and try to find some others. I want to visit a long list of places I have highlighted on my travel guide and continue to postpone.
But... one thing a time.

Oggi, visto che le vacanze sono vicine e molti sono in partenza, voglio suggerirvi un economicissimo modo per ricordare luoghi bellissimi o spiagge da sogno che visiteremo. Quando siamo in vacanza, la tentazione di acquistare i famosi "ricordini" è irresistibile, vero? Ci cadiamo tutti. A me però è capitato più di una volta di riguardare mesi dopo il mio preziosissimo (al momento) acquisto e chiedermi a cosa stessi pensando quando ho deciso di comprarlo. Vi è mai capitato? Ma poi ovviamente, non ce la sentiamo di liberarcene, dopo tutto è un ricordo. Ultimamente, quindi, mi impongo di ridurre all'osso questi acquisti nati da impulsi istantanei e come tali raramente"intelligenti".
Ho però trovato un modo per tenere vicino a me tutto il mondo che finora ho visto.  Non che sia un'idea nuova, ma a me piace molto.

Today, as the holidays are getting near and many of you are about to leave, I want to suggest you a very cheap way to remember the beautiful place or dreamy beaches we will visit. When we're on holiday, the temptation to buy souvenirs is irresistible, isn't it? We all loose the battle. But I have happened (and not so seldom) to look months later at my precious purchase and ask myself what the hell was I thinking when I decided to buy it. Did you as well? But we will never part from that object in any case, it's still a memory. Lately I force myself to reduce all those impulsive purchases. But I found a way to keep with me a bit of all the world I have visited. Not a new idea, right, but I like it a lot.

Avevo una grossa cornice Ribba dell'IKEA, di quelle in cui ci stavano 5 foto in fila, che avevo sistemato fra le 2 finestre della sala. All'interno avevo messo le foto che mi piacevano più scattate lungo il Nilo. Ma alla lunga non mi convinceva più e volevo comunque sfruttare lo spazio lungo e stretto tra le finestre.
Ho pensato quindi di costruire una piccola bacheca delle stesse dimensioni della cornice: inizialmente volevo usare la cornice stessa che è molto profonda, aggiungendo delle mensoline all'interno e rimuovendo il vetro. Alla fine invece mio papà ha fatto una struttura ex novo, in legno nero dipingendo il fondo nello stesso grigio chiaro con cui ho dipinto un paio di muri della sala.
E sulle mensoline trova ora posto la mia collezione di sabbie/terre/sassi/conchiglie che raccolgo in giro per il mondo!!
Quando parto porto con me un sacchettino di plastica e qualche elastico che poi tengo sempre nella borsa, non si sa mai. E al momento opportuno, il sacchetto si riempie con un po' di sabbia raccolta in un deserto o su una spiaggia o in un parco con qualche sassolino o conchiglia.
Al mio ritorno a casa travaso il tutto in quei piccoli vasetti delle marmellate o del miele, avete presente quelli delle colazioni negli hotel? Non credo che se ne abbiano a male se dopo aver mangiato la marmellata il vasetto vuoto me lo tengo io. Ovviamente la famiglia collabora e ora ne ho un bel sacchetto pieno da usare al momento opportuno.

I had a big IKEA frame  (Ribba), in which you could put 5 pictures which I had hung in the space between the 2 windows in my living room. I had put inside some of the best pictures taken along the Nile, but after some years it didn't convince me anymore. But I still wanted to use the long and narrow space between the windows.
In a first time I thought of using the same frame, which is very deep: remove the glass and add some little shelves, but then my dad made a new wooden frame (same size), added the shelves and painted the back panel with the same light grey tone I used for a couple of walls in my living room.
And on the shelves... taa-da! My collection of sand/soil/stones and shells taken during my journeys!
When I leave for a trip I take with me a small plastic bag and a couple of elastic, and then take them always with me in my bag. When it's the perfect moment I gather some sand from a desert or a beach or a park or some little stones and shells.
When I'm home I put it in the small glass jam jars, you know, the ones they give you in the hotel breakfasts. I suppose they don't mind if I take with me the empty jar once I have eaten the jam inside. My family helps and now I have a big bag of empty small jars.

Sulla carta adesiva che applico al coperchio scrivo il nome del luogo del "prelievo" e la data e poi aggiungo un nastro e qualcosa che mi ricordi a prima vista dov'ero.

Un charm con una scritta cinese, ad esempio, per la campagna della Cina. O un charm a forma di cammelli per ricordarmi del deserto del Wadi Rum di cui un tratto l'ho percorso a dorso di dromedario.
O un braccialettino pieno di campanellini regalato da bimbe in India. O un semplice bottone con fantasia scozzese.

Se amate il craft e avete cassetti pieni di nastri e altri materiali, sicuramente non vi sarà difficile combinarli insieme per trovare l'effetto migliore.
E avrete sempre con voi un pezzettino di mondo.
Attenzione però! Sinceratevi che non ci siano divieti per quanto riguarda portare via sabbia o sassi, come ad esempio in alcune spiagge della Sardegna o in qualche isola tropicale!! In alcuni posti è vietato e non è certo il caso di infrangere le regole per un po' di sabbia!!

Then I write the name of the place I was and the date on  adhesive white paper and I stick it onto the lid. I usually add a nice ribbon and something that recalls immediately where I was, like a chinese-written charm for China. Or a camel-shaped charm for the dersert of Wadi Rum, where I did my first experience of dromedary riding. Or a ribbon bracelet full of small bells given from children in India. Or a simple scottish tartan button.

 If you love crafting and have drawers full of ribbons and pretty materials it won't be difficult to find the perfect match.
And you'll always have with you a small bit of the world.
Attention! In some places gathering sand or shells is forbidden! Always ask first if you don't wan t to break some rules!!
