I'm back (part III)

Eccoci qui, dopo l'esperienza decisamente demoralizzante del mercatino di questo fine settimana... tra la scarsa affluenza e il tempo brutto direi che come prima volta è andata proprio male.
Pazienza, mi consolo ripensando al viaggio che non ho ancora terminatro di raccontarvi.
Oggi ci aspettano i castelli e i resti medioevali. Lo so, sto tenendo il clou (Petra) alla fine, ma credetemi è valsa davvero la pena lasciarla per ultima, e così farò anche io....

Here we are again, after the bad experience of last weekend market... considering the few people and the bad weather, I have to say it went really bad.
So i try to cheer up thinking about the trip that I still have not finished to tell you about.
Today is the day of the medieval castles. I know I am keeping the best (Petra) as last, but believe me, it has really been worth leaving it for the last day... I'll do the same!

Innanzitutto ci sono i castelli del deserto: quelli che abbiamo visitato sono stati tre, edifici sperduti nel bel mezzo del deserto arido, tra radi cespugli e strade che finiscono all'orizzonte.

First of all there are the desert castles. The ones we visited were only three (there are many more), lonely building surrounded by the dry desert, with only a few thin bushes and roads that lead to the horizon.

Ecco il castello di Amra, un padiglione destinato alla caccia e agli svaghi del principe. Completamente affrescato all'interno, esempio rarissimo di dipinti medioevali islamici, corredato da un complesso di terme coronate da una cupola su cui sono raffigurate costellazioni e segni zodiacali.

Here you are Amra, a pavillon wich was designed for the prince to game hunt and  relax. Completely covered by frescoes which is very strange for medieval islamic art. It is also associated to a termae complex, topped by a cupola on which there is the representation of the constellation and zodiacal signs.

Poi il castello di al-Kharana, un caravanserraglio, con stanze decorate da delicati bassorilievi che si rincorrono su due piani intorno ad un cortile centrale. Qui stanchi mercanti e animali esausti venivano ricoverati e rifocillati, prima di proseguire il loro viaggio lungo la via delle spezie, della seta o dell'incenso. Decisamente spartano visto dall'esterno ma raffinato pur se essenziale all'interno.

Then there is al-Kharana, a caravanserai, in which the rooms, all surrounding a central squared courtyard, are decorated with delicate bas-reliefs. Here tired merchants and exhausted animals were welcomed and fed before proceeding along the Spice Route, the Silk Route or the Incense Route. Very austere from the outside but elegant, though essential on the inside.

L'ultimo è stato Azraq, un castello di grandi dimensioni che ospitò anche il famosissimo Lawrence d'Arabia. Non mi ha colpito più di tanto ad essere onesta, ma è risultato molto interessante per il modo in cui sono stati realizzati i soffitti (che ingegneri!).

The last of them was Azraq, the big castle in which also slept the famous Lawrence of Arabia. Not that much, to be honest, though it was very interesting for the way the ceiling was realized (great engineers!).

Un capitolo a parte lo meritano invece i castelli crociati: noi abbiamo visitato Ajloun, quello musulmano, la roccaforte di Salah-a-din e Kerak, cristiano, del crudele Rinaldo di Chatillon.
Imponenti, severi e maestosi, costruiti entrambi in ottime posizioni per controllare ampie porzioni di territorio, come la via dei pellegrini che veniva dalla Siria e diretta a Gerusalemme.

Mi hanno fatto molto pensare al terribile scontro di culture e civiltà, per interessi puramente economici ma mascherato da lotta di religione. Il controllo dei Luoghi Santi. Ma mi domando e dico (come dice Montalbano), proprio perchè sono Santi, questi Luoghi non meriterebbero rispetto, amore e tutela da parte di tutti, invece di distruzioni che proseguono da secoli?
In ogni caso, mi riguarderò il bellissimo film Le Crociate (Kingdom of Heaven), con lo stupendo Jeremy Irons. E' un film che mi fa sempre riflettere.

Another chapter mut be dedicated to the castles built during the Crusades: ve have only visited Ajloun, the muslim one, headquarter of Salah-a-din, and Kerak, the christian one, home to the cruel Rinaldo di Chatillon. Severe and majestic, both built in excellent positions to control large areas, for exaple the pilgrim road from Syria to Jerusalem.

They made me think to the terrible war between the two cultures for mere economic interests but masquerated as a religion war. The control of the Holy Places. But I think: considering they are Holy, and for all, should not they deserve respect, love and protection by everyone instead of a destruction that has been going on since centuries?
I will watch again Kingdom of Heaven, with the wonderful Jeremy Irons. It's a film that makes me think every time I watch it.

preparando il mercatino...

Lo so che vi aspettavate il proseguimento del mio bellissimo viaggio ma, questo fine settimana parteciperò per la prima volta ad un mercatino di hobbistica presso l'Idroscalo di Milano.
Non so nemmeno cosa aspettarmi, ho letto tanti pro e contro di hobbiste riguardo i mercatini, ma alla fine ho deciso di provare. Se sarà una brutta esperienza pazienza, non ci riproverò. Non ho nemmeno idea delle quantità di articoli da presentare...

I know you were especting some other pictures and info about my trip but this next weekend I'm going to partecipate to my first market experience!!
I don't even know what to expect, I've read so much about it, many pros and many cons. Should it be boring or difficult, well, at least I will know and never do it again.
I don't even know hom much to prepare....

I'm back (part II)

Oggi vi porto a visitare un altro bellissimo sito romano, la città di Jerash, che viene chiamata la Pompei del Medio Oriente.
Si entra dal maestoso Arco di Adriano, costruito apposta quando l'imperatore è stato in visita alla città. Dopo aver percorso la strada di accesso alla città, e superando l'Ippodromo, ecco la prima meraviglia: la Piazza Ovale colonnata.

 Today I show you another beautiful roman site, the city of Jerash, which is called the Pompeii of Middle East.
You can enter the city through the huge Hadrian's Arch, built on the occasion of the imperator's visit to the city. After walking along the access road (passing by the Hyppodrome), here you can find the first marvel of this site: the Oval Plaza.

E' la piazza in cui si incontrano le due vie principali delle città romane, il cardo e il decumano, ma a differenza degli altri fori classici, questo è di forma ovale, e tutto circondato da splendide colonne ioniche.

It's the forum, the point in which the two main roads of all the roman cities (cardus and decumanus) did encounter, but instead of being square, this one is oval shaped, and encircled by splendid ionic columns.

Saliamo leggermente alle spalle della piazza ed ecco il Teatro Sud (questa città ne ha due, il primo, quello sud, molto capiente, ed uno più piccolo per l'elite, situato nella zona nord della città).

Just behind the Oval Plaza is placed the South Theatre (there are two theatres in Jerash, this one, bigger and very well preserved, the other one in the northern area of the city and much smaller).

Procedendo si incontra il Tempio di Artemide, protettrice della città. Bellissime colonne corinzie che si stagliano nell'azzurro del cielo, e costruite con un sistema antisismico.

Going on you can find the lovely Temple of Artemis, patron goddess of the city. Beautiful corinthian columns high in the blue sky.

La strada per tornare alla Piazza Ovale è il Cardo Massimo, una lunga via colonnata circondata da edifici, negozi e una fontana monumentale, il Ninfeo.

Going back to the Oval Plaza we have walked along the Cardo Maximus, a long street surrounded by buildings (it was the shopping centre), a magnificent and huge fountain (the Nymphaeum) and columns.

Nel sito sono presenti anche edifici di un'epoca più tarda, alcune chiese con pavimenti musivi spettacolari, in particolare la Chiesa dei Santi Cosma e Damiano. Nelle altre pascolavano un buon numero di capre tranquille....

 There are also remains of the next byzantine era, some churches with splendid mosaic-floors, especially the Church of Saints Cosma and Damian. The other ones were home to a group of quiet goats...

I'm back (part I)

Eccomi qui. Appena tornata da una meravigliosa settimana in... Giordania. Uno di quei meravigliosi posti che ho nel cuore e che desiseravo tanto vedere. E come al solito torno a casa entusiasta e con tonnellate di foto. Che voglio condividere con voi che leggete le mie pagine.

Here I am. I just came back from... Jordan. One of those beautiful places that have a special place in my heart and that I really longed to see. And as usual I come home enthusuastic and with tons of pictures, which I want to share with you that read these pages.

Dunque, ho pensato che inizierò con i resti romani che si trovano sparsi nel Paese. La Giordania infatti faceva parte della grande Provincia della Siria e i nostri antenati hanno lasciato monumenti e città.
A partire dalla capitale Amman, una città color crema che è sormontata da una cittadella sulla quale svetta il tempio dedicato ad Ercole. E lasciando vagare lo sguardo, ecco poco sotto, ai piedi della collina, il bellissimo teatro romano, perfettamente conservato.

I though that I am going to start with the roman heritage which is scattered all around the Country. Jordan was part of the great Syrian Province and our ancestors left beautiful monuments and cities. Starting from the capital, Amman the cream-coloured city which is topped by a citadel in which remain the rests of the Temple of Hercules. And if you let your eye wander, there you are a beautiful an well preserved roman theatre.

La città è poi passata sotto il controllo dell'impero romano d'oriente che la ha abbellita di basiliche bizantine di cui restano pochi resti e infine sotto gli arabi. Quello che vedete qui è il palazzo Ummayade (quello che ne resta), con delicatissimi bassorilievi e decori tipicamente arabi.

The city then passed under the control of the Roman Empire of Orient which has built many byzantine basilicae (only a few rests remain) and then of the Arabs. What you can see here is the Ummayad palace, with lovely bas reliefs and typical arab decorations.
