Creating a Haunted House

This year for Halloween I wanted to change some things in my home decor.
Since even before I had my own little house, it's been a tradition I organized a dinner party with my friends: we chat and eat all the good things the seasonal products allow us to prepare (cheese and pumpkin pie! chestnut and stout beer risotto! legumes creams together with cereals bread slowly raising in the kitchen....)
During the last years I have decorated my house with many small objects that recalled this particular period of the year: the "trick or treat" banner, the plush witch, some small panels both embroidered or patchwork-style. And all was in the typical colour-pattern of black-purple-orange. This year, though, it looked a little too "baby". I wanted to spicy up things a bit. So I went for a haunted house theme.

The decision has been a though one: a haunted house like the one in the film "The Others" (breathtaking film, with a subtle and sometimes creepy tension never fading into the grotesque so typical of the horror films) orthe Snow White evil witch lab (other exceptional film - will I ever grow up??) ? So at the end I decided that once upon a time there was an abandoned house which has been occupied by a whitch who transformed it into her lab. Nice compromise.
But.... an abandoned house means no color at all and my dining room is very colourful! The interventions needed to ba many but simple because, starting on tuesday, I want all my colours back (since the most of them come from sweet memories from the places I visit during my crazy World Grand Tour)

(Shame on me!

Spiderwebs on the pictures

First of all I had to cover all my pictures. On the wide wall of my dining room, in fact, after whitewashing the house back this summer I have hung a lot of pictures taken during my journeys. (shame on me! I know I still haven't finished posting my before and after shots!) Surely in an abandoned house you couldn't find pictures of indian and middle-eastern marketplaces nor of the flashing neon lights of a route66 motel. So.... many spiderwebs (fake, of course) have weakened a bit the colour splashes. Could I do better? Of course I could, but I didn't want to spend a fortune on spiderwebs and, if I have to be honest, I'm so proud of my wall I didn't want to cover it all...

Obiettivo raggiunto?

Creepy portraits

Also on the long shelf above the TV I have a lot of pictures of people I love. Modern and colourful, obviously. Here I wanted to add a bit of the creepy feeling. So I searched on the web some victorian ghost-like and sinister portraits, you know the ones in sepia? I just printed them and added some spiderwebs and black candles. The atmosphere to me is just like the one you find in the ghost stories, big pilaster of the late 1800 english literature (like Henry James, right?) What do you think?

Creepy portraits

Witch cabinet
Number two: the shelf with all my sands and shells from the world. This has been easier. Looking at the rocks and shells I imediately thought of a witch cabinet, with all the ingredients for potions. I just removed the ribbons and charms from every small jar, and covered some of those with freaky labels (good job Google!). I added a couple of covers and strings, some fake moss, some parts of a fake plant (yopu know the herbs hanging to dry?) and.... - masterpiece - a fake heart and fake lung, very realistic, really, which I have put in two jars with some water and a couple of drops of licorice syrup. Lovely! Some spiderwebs completed the whole.

Spiderwebs everywhere!

Spiderwebs everywhere
Spiderwebs are everywhere this year!
Tomorrow I'll show you the final touches: the witch evil books and accessories.
Stay tuned
