How was your year in travel?

Questo era l'oggetto di una mail che ho ricevuto da Lonely Planet, che mi invitava a fare un bilancio "giramondo" di quest'anno.
Com'è stato? Beh, diciamo che non mi sono tirata indietro, anche se ho optato, vista la situazione lavorativa, su mete più vicine (e più economiche!).
Ripercorrerò questo strano 2012 (sarà un lungo post, spero di non annoiarvi!!).

This was the object of an e-mail I received some days ago from Lonely Planet, which invited me to recall and reflect on the journeys I have made this year.
How has it been? Well, let's say I did not restrain... although I have chosen closer (and less expensive) destinations.
Let's travel back in my memory to remember this strange 2012...(it's gonna be a long post, I hope not to bore you...)


In febbraio, per un colpo di testa, ho fatto un paio di giorni a Bruxelles. Città incantevole, che merita sicuramente un paio di giorni in più, almeno per visitare il Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts e per fare quattro passi tra le vie e i palazzi Art Nouveau.

 E' stata una delle settimane più fredde dell'anno e in effetti le fontane nei parchi erano ghiacciate, ma non hanno tolto nulla all'eleganza di questa città.

In February I suddenly decided I had to go a couple of days in Bruxelles. Lovely city, which deserves a couple days more (at least to see the Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts and to wander in the Art Nouveau district). It has been one of the coldest weeks in the year and the fountains in the parks were frozen but it could only add glamour to this city.

La Grand Place è bellissima e ho avuto la fortuna di trovare un hotel proprio nella piazza, come dire, in piazza San Marco a Venezia. Mi sono concassa questo lusso, insieme alle gaufres calde e coperte di cioccolato fuso, alle favolose moules frites e al museo di Magritte.
Spero di tornare presto, abbinando anche un giro ad Anversa e Bruges e alle famose birrerie trappiste, per far contenti i miei amici. Il Belgio mi ha davvero sorpreso, non ne sapevo quasi nulla e mi incuriosisce....

The Grand Place is fabulous and I've been lucky enough to find a hotel in the heart of this square,

as it was, let's say in San Marco Square in Venice. I have treated myself with this small luxury, as well as hot gaufres covered with melted chocolate, wonderful moules frites and the Magritte Museum.
I hope to come back soon, spending some days also in Antwerp and Bruges and in the famous trappist breweries, to make my friends happy.
Belgium really surprided me: I did not know almost anything before and it makes me very curious

Un paio di mesi dopo, a fine aprile, MR mi convince a visitare la sua Germania, Paese in cui non ero mai stata. Ma invece della classica Berlino o della Baviera cosa mi propone?? Le città della Lega Anseatica, sul Mar Baltico, nel Nord più Nord. Per me un posto vale l'altro, visto che non conosco nulla della Germania e in più stavo leggendo I Buddenbrooks... via con un giro ad Amburgo, Lubecca e Brema. Abbiamo anche aggiunto una mezza giornata a Travemunde, per lasciar vagare lo sguardo sul mar Baltico (chiaramente pioveva....)

A couple of months later MR convinces me to go and visit her Germany, Country in which I have never been.

But instead of the classic Berlin or Bavaria, what does she suggest? The cities of the Anseatic League, on the Baltic Sea, up in the North. I have no objections, as I don't know anything of Germany, and I was most appropriately reading the Buddenbrooks... so we travelled between Hamburg, Bremen and Lubeck. We also added half a day in Travemunde, to let our sight wander on the cold Baltic Sea (obviously it rained...)

Bilancio: sicuramente interessanti, Lubecca è un gioiellino dall'aria molto tranquilla e signorile, con i suoi giardini nascosti e i palazzi dei ricchi mercanti e Brema va vista senza pioggia, in modo che la piazza

medioevale con la statua di Rolando risalti nella sua imponenza. Amburgo, non saprei, tra le tre mi ha colpito sicuramente meno, anche se mi ha portato molto a riflettere sulla insensatezza delle guerre (la città è stata completamente bombardata durante la WWII).
 
It has surely been very interesting: Lubeck is a small jewel, very calm and elegant, with its hidden gardens and rich merchants' palaces, while Bremen must be seen without rain, to fully admire the medieval square with the statue of Roland.
I still have not understood well Hamburg, it has struck me less than the others, though it made me think of the complete nonsense of war (it has been heavily bombed during WWII).

Travemunde, beach and Baltic Sea

Arrivano le vacanze e non ci siamo ancora accordati per una meta comune (anzi ci siamo detti ognuno per sè). Così approfitto e prenoto un tour in Turchia, che da tempo voglio visitare ma che per la sua vicinanza passava sempre in secondo piano. Sono partita col mio mini trolley alla scoperta dell'affascinante Istanbul, crocevia medioevale delle grandi religioni, dei siti archeologici disseminati sulla costa del Mare Egeo (tra cui gli eccezionali Troia ed Efeso) e della regione più interna e naturalisticamente parlando spettacolare, la Cappadocia.

June has come and we have not found a common destination. So I think about it for a while and I book a tour in Turkey, a place I've been wanting to visit sice a long time but which,

as it's so close, was always postponed. I left with my mini trolley to discover the wonderful Istanbul, medieval cross-road for the great religions, the greek and roman archeological sites (including the exceptional Troy and Ephesus) and the inner and spectacular Cappadocia.

Qui ho vinto la paura e ho fatto un giro in mongolfiera, per godere un panorama mozzafiato sulle stranissime formazioni rocciose che prendono il nome di "camini delle fate".

Un Paese incredibile, vario, ospitale, che conserva siti archeologici di altissima importanza (e voi lo sapete quanto mi piace scarpinare tra le rovine...)
Ma Istanbul mi rimane davvero nel cuore, con la sua vivacità, il gran Bazaar, i colori, i profumi delle spezie, la commovente grandiosità di Santa Sofia...
E anche Goreme, con i camini delle fate che iniziano a prendere forma nel cielo lilla dell'alba....

Here I put away my fear and I made a tour in a baloon, to admire the breathtaking landscape, full of the strangest rocky formations which are named "fairy chimneys".

Turkey

An incredible Country, very varying, hospitable, which preserves highly important archeological sites (and you know how much I love to walk through ancient ruins....) 

But Istanbul has found a very special place in my heart, with its vivacity, the grand Bazaar, the colours, the perfumes of the spices, the moving grandiosity of Hagia Sofia...
And Goreme too, with the fairy chimneys that take shape in the dawn-lilac sky...



Passano ancora i mesi ed è ora di pensare al classico giretto in Inghilterra, che non può mancare.... soprattutto prima di Natale. Così quest'anno opto per Liverpool, patria dei Beatles e sede di un porto mercantile che ha reso grande l'Inghilterra nel mondo.

Time passes and it's time to think of the classic peek in England which I cannot miss... especially before Christmas. This year I choose Liverpool, hometown of the Beatles and provided with a big harbour which made this city great.

 Purtroppo piove molto e non riesco a godermi appieno la bellezza elegante e discreta della città, ma approfitto e visito alcuni musei veramente interessanti e bel costruiti. E non mi faccio mancare nemmeno una scappata a Chester, per respirare un'aria un po' più retrò...

Unfortunately it rains very much and I cannot feel the elegant and discrete beauty of the city as it deserves. Anyway, I have time to visit some great museums, interesting and well organized. To breath a more "old-fashioned" air I also spend one day in Chester, which I loved last year and decided to visit again.

Ecco, questo è stato il mio 2012 in viaggio. Voi? Che bellissimi posti avete visitato??
Io ovviamente sto già tirando a sorte la meta per il 2013....
